Before chinking (filling the gaps in between logs with mortar mix) |
There is some finish work left to do. We will make it naturally blended with a landscape, yet elegant and enjoyable inside – enough to feel very comfortable and entertain our aesthetics taste. There are many development projects that could be done on the property next. Our lifestyle through this build is far from deluxe, but is pretty liberating and private.
Should I instead have hired a general contractor to build a turnkey brand new house (e.g. for convenience and comfort, e.g. in an urban upscale neighborhood)? Well, I’ve already done so. I was a private investor and got a fair profit after it was sold. If I was to buy that house, its mortgage would keep me chained to a 9-5 Big Employer for N years. I love working and I put my best into it, but I want to have a freedom to follow a “median path”, at times working on my own creative projects as self-employed and always have a choice on where to go next.
With all that I know now, this build could have been way easier and smoother journey… However, it was worth the sweat and hard work, and the nature retreat with a beautiful log house on it is paying back with an auspicious energy.
Does it enslave us? Technically, to some degree, yes, but it is an authentic type of “enslavement” – a responsibility to care for the real nature environment around you, as it was meant to be for humans. Note though, with all modern amenities embedded, there is no difference, in terms of comfort, from a regular house living style. It requires being a diligent land steward or hiring a property management company for maintenance. City citizens outsource this by paying fees and are rather unconscious about it.

Our lot is located on a hill with a rolling southern slope, protected on a back by a steep hill from the north and is surrounded by 40 acres of private forested property with just one neighbor. There is wildlife all around and mountain views. Feng Shui – the way how it had been applied in the ancient times. It has lots of potential for permaculture and aquaculture activities, forestry or small scale farming. We are on a private paved road and direct access off state highway that connects the city with the mountains. There is unlimited possibility to be creative on 10+ acres located close to hiking trails, snow parks, lakes and ski resorts.
